This month the Northern California Cherry Blossom Festival, (or Sakura Matsuri) returns to San Francisco for a 45th anniversary celebration. A multi-weekend event that kicks off April 14th with numerous runway shows, and cultural performances and culminating on April 22nd with the Grand Parade, the Cherry Blossom festival is one of the largest Asian Cultural celebrations in North America.
According to the official press release, this year's event will include several special acknowldgements and honors including the 100th year anniversary of the National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, D.C., a tribute to the 100th Infantry Battalion, the 442nd Regimental Combat Team and the Military Intelligence Service comprised of all Japanese American soldiers whom are receiving the Congressional Gold Medal of Honor, and an observance of the one year anniversary of the Tohoku Region Earthquake and Tsunami which devastated Japan in March of 2011.
In addition to the honors and acknowledgements the festival will include tons of food stalls selling traditional Japanese street treats such as Takoyaki (pictured right), on-site fashion shows and runway presentations, and a local artisan village specially curated for the festival by Bazaar Bizarre and New People World.
