Saturday, August 21, 2010 at 10:54AM East Bay Focus: Berkeley's Beehive Market

The concept of shopping local with an emphasis on organic, environmentally friendly goods is not a new concept for Berkeley, a city that has been synonymous with artisan cooking craft since Alice Waters first opened the doors to Chez Panisse 1971. But with Berkeley's Beehive Market the artisan movement gets decidedly more accessible with tons of vendors in the beauty, fashion and food markets coming together every Saturday in the North Berkeley Neighborhood.
The market, which founders began with the mission to "support local, sustainable businesses and services" has seen a growing attendance since opening in mid-June, as shoppers come from all over the east bay, and San Francisco.
Beehive Market not only supports local artisans, but local independent music as each week a different group of speakers and bands perform.
The Beehive Market goes down from 10am-2pm every Saturday at 1701 San Pablo Avenue, in North Berkeley, and is easily accessible from the North Berkeley Bart station.
