Backstage beauty: Band of Outsiders Spring 2013
One the most sought out invites of fashion week, the Band of Outsiders show attracts both celebrities and the most influential editors in fashion season after season with innovative collections and highly produced theatrical runway shows. A big part of the theatrics at Band shows is the inspired beauty look created to compliment the collection. For Spring 2013 Style Wylde was once again invited backstage with Shiseido key artist Dick Page to get an inside look on that cinematic beauty at the Band of Outsiders show.
Inspiration for the look: Battle Royale a controversial Japanese thriller based on the 1999 book by Koushun Takami in which a futuristic distopia sees the government forcing young students to participate in a game that requires the victor to kill all of his opponents. (ed note: Sound familiar? Could this be where Suzanne Collins got the idea for her major Young Adult best seller, The Hunger Games 10 years later?) The stylized look of the film blended with real-life military images served as an inspiration for both the collection and Page's beauty look.
How it was done: Within the collection the execution of the inspiration was handled in a very abstract manner, with only slight military hints as opposed to more literal, and obvious, khaki and brass touches. To compliment this abstraction of an idea, Page opted for a more neutral mood, with a single stand out slash element placed under eyes. Using a professional grade lab sample in pure white, Page applied the slash in one smooth stroke. The effect was similar to a football player's sun-reflective stripes and definitely gave the Band girls a 'going into battle' look.
In addition to the undereye stripe, model's brows were given added definition with Shimmering Cream Eye Color in either Sable (BR709) or Leather(BR306) depending on the model's natural skin tones.
Hair and nails for this look were also kept extremely low-key. Hair was twisted and heat-dried to create long loose waves and then parted on the deep side and secured with pins to set in order to create a falling in the eyes look, and nails were kept clean and natural in an almost nonexistent buff shade.
